TJÖRN 2.0

ongoing

The location of this project is at the main entry-point to the island of Tjörn, on the Swedish west coast. A hilly, forested landscape overlooking the sea in different directions. Strategically placed in a rural context, with easy urban access and

unlimited nature treats.

The plot is divided into two distinct areas, defined by their position, materiality and accessibility. One being the “mountain”, a rocky, circular hill-top, exposed, arcane and challenging. The other, the “low-land”, a flat-bed shelf, sheltered and obvious.

The structural expression of the mixed program that will eventually include housing and commercial space, is split between these areas, both in terms of connection to the ground itself and in terms of visual exposure and audacity, making the quality of the overall composition and layout a key aspect of the design challenge.

The design concept is driven by the goal of creating a contemporary development in a consistent modern language that also draws on recognizable historical precedents. The overall building style is based on the gables and pitched roofs of the traditional, historically dominating local fishing industry buildings. But their final anchoring and expression has been shifted to be rooted in their new sense of time and place.
